The Short Version
OpeningNinja is designed with privacy in mind. Your chess data stays on your device by default. We only collect what's necessary to provide the service, and we don't sell or share your data with third parties.
What We Collect
If you use OpeningNinja without an account:
Nothing. All your data (openings, training progress, settings) is stored locally on your device using IndexedDB. We don't have access to it.
If you create an account:
- Email address: Used for authentication and account-related communications
- Name (optional): If provided during signup
- Chess data: Your openings and training progress, only if you enable cloud sync
If you subscribe:
Payment processing is handled by Polar. We receive confirmation of your subscription status but don't store your payment details directly.
How We Use Your Data
- Authentication: To let you sign in and access your account
- Cloud sync: To sync your chess data across devices (if enabled)
- Subscription management: To provide access to paid features
That's it. We don't use your data for advertising, profiling, or anything beyond providing OpeningNinja's features.
Data Storage
Local data is stored in your browser's IndexedDB and persists until you clear your browser data or uninstall the PWA.
Account data is stored securely on our servers. We use industry-standard security practices to protect your data.
Third-Party Services
- Authentication: We may use OAuth providers (Google, GitHub) if you choose to sign in with them
- Payments: Polar handles subscription payments
- Hosting: Our service is hosted on standard cloud infrastructure
These services have their own privacy policies governing their handling of your data.
Cookies
We use essential cookies for authentication (session management). We don't use tracking cookies or analytics that follow you across the web.
Your Rights
You can:
- Export your data: Download your openings as PGN files anytime
- Delete your account: Request account deletion, and we'll remove all your data from our servers
- Use locally only: Continue using OpeningNinja without an account and keep all data on your device
Children's Privacy
OpeningNinja is a general audience application suitable for chess players of all ages. We don't knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 without parental consent.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy occasionally. We'll post changes here with an updated revision date. Significant changes will be communicated through the app.
